We welcome the white paper as a positive step forward in tackling the housing crisis, but there needs to be much more ambition to tackle the regional challenge. There were multiple references to the housing problems facing London, for example, but the north barely merits a mention. Cities with major housing challenges, such as Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle, were not mentioned once.
What is needed is a specific northern housing target. This will focus minds on the challenge of rebalancing the economy and encouraging the rapid housing growth we need. We then need clearer action to boost building in the north, including stamp duty cuts for new homes built in areas of the most acute housing need, as well as tax cuts for regenerating run-down properties.
