Brain drain to brain gain: Northern housing alliance calls for unified employment and housing agenda

New research shows that the North of England is suffering from a ‘brain drain’ of recent graduates but an influx of highly qualified migrant workers has so far masked the problem.

An alliance of the North’s largest housing providers has marked its first year in operation by launching “The Brain Gain”, a unique piece of research examining the role of housing in helping northern regions attract and retain talent.

“The Brain Gain” is the first major piece of research published by Homes for the North (H4N) and combines new data analysis with a poll of over 2,000 graduates aged 20 to 35. 55% of graduates aged 20-35 polled said that the quality of housing would be a key factor in deciding where to live if they were to move, closely followed by 50% of participants citing the cost of housing as a key influencing factor.
